Animal Care and Welfare: Mission

The special relationship between humans and animals is one that has been treasured by many different civilizations for thousands of years. Cats in Ancient Egypt were afforded Godly status while in Roman times they were recognized as symbols of independence and liberty--and rodent control! In Barbados, cats and other animals are not always viewed in such a positive light. Our mission is to nurture an awareness of  of the positive animal-human relationship, as well as an overall appreciation, respect and protection for the environment we share. Through this program we aim to change the culture and the way we view and treat our animals. We teach respect and humanity--to ALL.

Goals

To teach the basics of kindness and compassion to all and introduce the positive human-animal relationship;

  1. Encourage the bond between people, animals and the environment.

  2. Encourage a more positive approach to animals and animal welfare, and help children to develop empathy, kindness and compassion to all living beings. Kindness to all is emphasized.

  3. Prevent animal cruelty, to install an understanding for animal care and a more empathic, compassionate human attitude in general.

  4. Develop strategies to reduce school bullying through encouraging kindness.

  5. Learn about pet ownership and Bite Awareness.

How we do this

Taught by Safe Cats own Wendy O'Neal, we offer three levels of teaching in Junior 2, 3 and 4. Each session is between 30 minutes to an hour depending on the age of the children and schedule. Each is taught in a way that the children can fully understand--the individual stages are developed specifically by age group and ability, and offer interactive components for all children to encourage focus and understanding. Hands-on, experiential teaching is one of the most effective learning tools.

They are also fun for the children!

Where we work

We have presented successfully in many schools across the island, both public and private. On request, we can put you in touch with schools where we have worked and provide a short video of one of our presentations/workshops.

We look forward to working with your students soon.
